RAP stands for Retard Attempting Poetry. People like it because they are retarded, and tend to think that they will be a "gangsta" if they listen to it.

People listen to rap for the same reasons people listen to rock, jazz, country, etc. Either A) they like it, B) they can relate to it, C) it makes them feel good, D) they can dance to it, or E) all of the above.
I do understand why people come up with that kind of conclusion about rap; that's all you see on TV and hear on the radio. But for the most part your opinion, like most everyone else's that claims they hate rap, is very one-sided. It's based on only one dimension of the genre instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you were willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'd discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than "grills," sex, and the like. For example:
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
Unfortunately, you'll rarely find any of them in the mainstream media. That's what the real problem is.

If you don't get why rap is so popular then you are stupid. There's loads of talented rapper in the music business. You need to stop hating on rap. If you don't like it, just don't listen to it. As simple as that. I think you don't understand rap that's why you hate it. I love rap and it's nice to listen to. Obviously, you just stick to one type of music, that's why you are being so stupid.

Millions of rap followers all over the USA buy and buy that rap. I prove to myself that I am a rapper by going outside and hitting my trash can and empty quarts. I just start talkin jibberish and nonsense for hours.
Then my neighbors call the cops and I retaliate with "What's Up G" You come to get me. Then I start blastin with my water hose, damn coppers.
Then eventually I get bailed out of jail by my possi and we go get even wid da rival crew.
Its all the day in the life of a rapper.
But I don't like it at all

Well, just like most music, if you relate to it somewhat, you might like it. Or, maybe you like the beats, and like to bob your head to it. I like it for those 2 reasons. I don't really relate to much of it, but, I grew up in a city with a lot of people who experienced the types of things rappers rap about. So, that is the music I grew up with, so it reminds me of my childhood - and I enjoy that.
The really good rappers are very talented to be able to flow inteligently.

because they are idiots with no talent just like a raper. A raper is a person who wants to be famous but his voice sucks so he can not sing so he has to talk to music.... rapping is their last resort when every other type of music turned them down. Rapping is for those who never made it in country, pop, or rock.....

Because it's cool. Me, personally, I would rather listen to The Best of Friday Night Bingo at the Elderly Home or fingernails on chalk, but people have different tastes. I prefer Jazz much, much more.

It's something different and people are always looking for something out of the ordinary, plus the fact that it tends to be more controversial or touch controversial subject matter and uses profanity most of the time.
