Yep, I used to live in Phoenix (2 years ago) and Las Vegas (last year).
Take I-17 north, go west on Hwy 74 up near the Anthem area, Go north on Hwy 93/60 toward Wickiup/Kingman, cut west on I-40 toward Kingman, take Hwy 93 north toward Hoover Dam/Las Vegas, Hwy 93 will become I-515, keep on going to Las Vegas.
It takes about 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and getting accross the Hoover dam.

This is about an hour faster than taking I-17 all the way to Flagstaff.

Check the flights. There are some cheap deals out there especially this time of year. Considering gas is over $3.00/gallon you may spend just as much for gas in your car as you would a round trip ticket and the flight is less than an hour. With a 7 day purchase I was able to find a fare of $159 r/t. With a 2 week advance purchase, it went down to $108.

Take I-17 north to Flagstaff.
Take I-40 west from Flagstaff to Kingman.
Get off at exit 48 (US 93) and take US 93 north-northwest to Vegas.

It's longer than just taking US 93 straight out of Phoenix, but at least you have more metro areas in which to stop during emergencies (should they arise). Western Arizona, at least from the atlas, looks pretty blinkin' bleak between Wickenburg and Kingman.....

Idunno is right - the way down US 60 through sun city takes a lot longer- lots of lights. Don't go 17 to 40 and make a left- way out of the way-100 miles
Warning : US 93 between Wickenberg and I-40 is on of the most dangerous roads in Arizona. In many places it's two lane- one going each way- cell phones often won't work and the nearest hospital is a long way away.
Pass with extreme care and know what to do do avoid head on collisions.
