the reason being,,,its when the race car comes into the pits,,he was able to speak with the crew chief(before radios came into use), have drinks passed to him from over the pit wall,,made fueling the car safer for the person putting the gas into the car,,,,when the driver is on the track,,it made it easier for him to see the pits(and the pit/message board from his pit crew, telling him lap times,when to pit,etc),,,by looking out the left side of the car while driving he had less things to block his view( inside the car,roll bars) of the pit area

In America we drive counter clockwise so the driver door is away from the walls. But in Astralia the drive clockwise so the race fans can see the drivers more clearly. Plus driving counter clockwise helps you "hug" the corners better making the area around the track shorter. That is why we race counter clockwise.

They drive counter-clockwise so the drivers ARE NOT NEXT TO THE WALL. In the event of a crash into the wall the drivers are safer this way.

We want our drivers away from the wall because if they hit they are less likely to get hurt.
