It depends on what you like.
If you want the best single-player, story-based adventure game I'd go with Dreamfall for PC.
If you want massive multiplayer online play with a more social aspect, then get a subscription to World of Warcraft.
If you want a simple cheap thrills puzzle game, get Sega Swirl which is a free at the link below.
If you like first-person shooting games, go with Half Life 2 or Quake 4.
Sports? Anything by EA Sports.
Old games? Command and Conquer Collection, Sim City 4, Starcraft, Diablo II, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, or The Longest Journey are all pretty good.

I'm a member...now, keep in mind you didn't say online or cd-rom games, but I'm a member of Club Pogo. You just go to pogo.com, and come up with some sorta screen name that you wanna use. If you wanna be a Club Pogo member, well then, you gotta pay, but I can get you a trial membership first, so you can have more games to play, and you can earn your badges. Lemme know if you wanna join. Send me an email to sanmanco128@hotmail.com, and tell me you're screen name, then I can add you to my friend's list, and give you a free, I think it's a 2-week trial membership, and you can decide from that if you wanna be a Club Pogo member or not.
On cd-rom, I like the Roller Coaster Tycoon games, but I don't like to play them on a laptop, which I'd have to, since my PC crashed, and I can't afford to fix it right now.
