i have hotmail account. how do I turn off this function?

I think I know what you're talking about, and I find it annoying too.

I found a few articles about it that I'll list below, but honestly, I don't know if I'll try any of them.

I think it's an Outlook Express issue. If you open up Outlook Express, then click on Tools then Accounts, your Hotmail account is probably listed there. Now you could probably delete it, but then you probably wouldn't be able to click e-mail links on the Internet to send mail.
I haven't tried this, but maybe you could change the options in Outlook Express...go to Outlook, then click on Tools, then Options. Try unchecking one or both of these: "check for new messages" (then you actually have to click Send/receive to do that) and/or uncheck "send and receive messages at start up." Like I said, I don't know if this will do any good, but it's easy to undo if it doesn't work.

That simply means you have 5 emails awaiting your attention.....as far as turning off a feature .. i'm sure you can just click the help button

It is telling you that you have unread emails in your mail account...Click on it and it will take you to your email..THEN READ THEM...Good luck

i had the same thing three days ago, it fixed it's self,believe it Yahoo., today, having trouble with Messenger.
