It only means something to those of us who have a religion, like for Christians it means to talk to God, but it has no meaning for someone who doesn't have a religion.

bypass by way of their beliefs----the position do they bypass once they die? If it is heaven or hell or purgatory etc. what may be the purpose of earth? I surely have had friends in all religions i imagine. i visit't discover one (except Jehovah's Witnesses) that believe in a Paradise Earth with eternal existence on it. Who believe the soul does die. maximum religions can make a real mess out of the Bible. It changed into positive to be shown why Acts 8:30&31.

quite interesting to see this question under this title.............to me, praying is something a believer would do; ask for something from someone, if one thinks the subject is out of ones control. I haven't needed such favor so far. to me, it's better to learn to deal with life by your own means, hence keeping all the credit. I might easily "ask" for salt, from anyone at the table, or I can go get it myself, for example.

Prayer is simply talking to God!
It really is not about religion but having a talking relationship with God!

Pray is an older English term for ask, as in, "I pray thee show me where the boat resteth, that I may embark."
In that instance you are praying to (asking of) the person who has the information.
