There are programs that are designed to search the web for registration forms. Once they find one, they are designed to fill it out a million times. Since most bots can't interpret the contents of images, the image verification keeps them from completing the registration.

Yeah basically this is to verify your an actual human. You see, on the internet there's spam bots that go around and try to make accounts on forums. They obviously are unable to see so this verification keeps any bots away from the forums.

They are trying to made sure you are a real person and not another computer. This happen a lot on the internet.
