My sympathy, and good luck. I have been without a car since the beginning of June, due to having been rear-ended too many times.
You might check out e-bay. There is a good 2nd hand dealer down the street from me, but I don't know where you are.
I am getting experienced with busses and rides with other people - not totally satisfactory, but until I get some money together, that is that.

If you can definatly go for a japanese. You will never go wrong with Nissan Honda or Toyota. German cars are also ok. I wouldn't go back to Rover for obvious reasons and I've been told not to go for Peugeot either. and Ford? Fix Or Repair Daily!
Vauxhall's are ok and very popular too especially the Astra however you need time to check them over. I had an F reg from new which was still running around five years ago when some taxi went into the back and insurance writ it off. But the one after that gave a few probs and my latest one, X reg LS 16V is giving me too many problems but this we have found out is due to the way the previous driver ran and kept the car. However for two grand you will not get the new shape Astra (wishful thinking!). Mark 4s are ok average looking cas, much better than the mk 3 astras.
I also had a sunny (nissan) which I bought at eight years old and ran it myself for another eight and it was still running, good clean engine and no problems to it at all. I made a mistake by part exing it as I didn't get much for it.
Get looking on autotrader and automart (or something to that effect). see if you can get the papers from last week showing cars (usually wed/thurs i think). also ring aroung all the local garages to see if theres anything worth going to see. I would at one point say yellow pages but in this day and age we got yell.com its very useful. Look on parkers and whichcar for reviews of particular cars and what to look out for in certain makes/models.
Good luck, hope you find somthing you like and runs for a long time.

By far the best bet is a BMW . There are plenty about under 2k. The 3 or 5 series pre 1990. Most of those engines will do 250,000 miles from new if looked after so don't worry if its high mileage., Get your own M O T before you pay for it at a garage where the car has never been before.

haha rover, I had a rover 400 before my current car, it was crap and died, engine seized haha.
I got a nissan almera now, its been a brilliant car, never failed, great condition, I don't use it much now, you can have it for £1500, 1996, 50k miles, service history and all that, dunno how much tax is on it. The problem is that I don't use it as I live in Liverpool and it is sat on my parents driveway back in my hometown (scousers everywhere here), my mum uses it for shopping every now and again.

Your best bet is auto trader or eBay, stick to a vauxhall or ford the insurance is cheap and so are the parts. Don't rush into it

Sorry about your rover. I have had one for four years and not had any trouble,(touch wood).
Hope you get yourself sorted out soon, it's no fun if you are stuck with no transport, it would really cause me problems as I live in a rural area with no and I mean no public transport.
Good luck.

why don't you just buy a new engine, as it would probs only cost about a few hundred pounds and then you would still have some money left.
