get rid of the knats that are still flying around the garbage disposal side and get it smelling "fresh" again. It still smells like rotting food. I tried baking soda already to no avail. Any constructive answers will be appreciated

The baking soda is a good idea. Leave it in there for a while instead of just rinsing it away. After an hour, use an old long handled scrub brush to wash around the inside of the disposal, and then rinse.
Another idea: As long as it is working again you could run the water, put on the disposal, and squirt about 1/2 cup of dish detergent into it.
You might also try using Ajax or Comet on a long handled scrub brush to clean out the inside and then rinse it. DO NOT USE BLEACH

vinegar and / or garlic will help to drive the bugs away. I am not an advocate of using bleach as it causes an allergic reation for me, but after oyu have killed off the bugs, oyu might try to scrub everything down with bleach to get rid of the smell- then you can always burn some vanilla candles or whatever smell you prefer to freshen it up a little- in the meantime while oyu are cleaning get some air flow going on, open a door and a window and put a fan in there to blow out the stale smelly air

Start with boiling hot water--a lot of it--which will help to cut the grease that leads to a lot of pluggages in the first place. It will also kill the bacteria and stuff you have growing from the original pluggage, as well as take care of any stages of insect development.

Other than that, you'll have to deal with the insects you already have (the flying ones). If the area is generally clean and waste enclosed in covered containers and removed frequently, they'll die off and go away on their own before long.

Use bleach to clean your disposal then use dishwashing liquid while your disposal is running to freshen up the smell. Bugs get caught in the bubbles and can't fly out.

Use some 20 Mule Team Borax. It's an excellent deodorizer, multipurpose cleanser, and is often used to kill roaches and ants...so I bet it would kill flies too. You can buy it at the grocery in the laundry soap section.

You could do a number of things: pour bleach down your drain, pour a kettle full of boiling water down it, grind up white vinegar ice cubes, or grind lemon slices (for a fresher smell).

I like to put lemon or lime pieces in mine and grind them up with some ice cubes to keep the blades sharp. I don't know about the gnats!

Bleach, TileX, Pine Sol. or Beer (drink enough and the smell will go away).
