I'm wondering if I am smart or stupid. Here is the situation. It usually takes me twice or three times as long to learn something, in comparison to my peers, but when I finally understands the concept and structure of the problem, I am able to manipulate what I've learn and do it much faster and better then most of my peers who have undergo the same learning process. For example, if I were learning a computer program, the instructor would have to explain it and I would have to read the material twice or three times before true understanding. But after that, I begin to figure out loopholes or manipulate the program to do the task much faster and better than what was expected of me. Also, I am able to understand concepts or structures, no matter how complex it is, but it will take me again, twice or three times as long to understand it. It is very easy for me to get into deep concentration, somewhat trace-like, for hours without eating or sleeping just to understand and solve a problem. In short, it takes me at least twice as long to learn something but when I do, I mostly surpass my peers in understanding. So am I intelligent or not? Real question and not trying to get an ego boost.

The is a slight chance that you might have a learning disorder that makes it difficult for you to understand things in a conventional manner. A counselor at your school could help identify this or your doctor could help.

Most likely, you just learn differently from your peers. I am terrible at foreign language and music. However, I do well in statistics and math. We all have strengths and weaknesses.

I think you are very smart for being able to identify that you learn differently than your peers. Recognizing this will help you in the future.

You could have some sort of RAM issue. Or maybe your processor is not being properly cooled which slows down processing speed, not to mention hinder the ability to save files among other things.

Unfortunately, you're operating a different system than I, so I dare not advise you on tweaking this or adjusting that...seems as if you've figured this out by yourself and it works! Why ask why?

Be careful not to over-clock though, if you try to make any adjustments...sometimes things aren't meant to work the same way for everyone. This is what makes us so unique.

Uhm...since I don't know you, I did not feel comfortable making any personal statements (although you did ask) so; I hope you enjoyed my (shall we say) synopsis.

People learn differently. PERIOD. There is no relation between the length of time it takes you to learn something and IQ. Some people have photographic memories and they can hear/see something one time and they get it. That does not make them smarter, it's just a function of HOW they learn. Men, for example, are more visually acute than women. (it's a fact) So for many men it is easier for them to learn by being SHOWN how to do something vs reading the instructions, etc. So I would not worry about your labels like "smart" or "stupid". It's a fact that Albert Einstein while brilliant and gifted in his area of expertise, was a complete moron on other areas. His wife had to write him notes so that he could remember his own phone number and what pocket his lunch money was in. We all learn differently. Relax and enjoy life.

I think you are smart enough to delve so deep in your own learning habits. It's good. I think you should work out a learning strategy of your own and not care much what others say. Don't be afraid of using your head. And every time you learn something, remember to praise yourself because you're doing it faster and faster. And from now on instead of saying 'I learn very slowly' say 'I learn more and more effectively'.
Perhaps Mind Control helps.

OK. Get this straight. If you were stupid, no matter how many times you were taught you wouldnt learn it or even if you did, you wouldnt be able to manipulate it in different ways. Since you say you can, that means you are also imaginative. Also I think it could be a matter of interests. If you are interested in a field you would learn it immediately.

I wouldn't say you are stupid, you just have a different way of learning. Some people can get it the first time from reading, others do better with verbal instruction, still others do better with actual hands on training, we are all different with different ways of learning....don't worry so much about your friends styles, in time you will learn what works best for you.

You understand the complexity of your own situation, which really is proof positive you're quite intelligent. People learn in different ways (http://www.chaminade.org/inspire/learnstl.htm to test yourself) and have "multiple intelligences" (google "Howard Gardner"). Have fun finding out more about yourself!

You are intelligent. The amount of time it takes to learn a task isn't relevant. That said, the fact that you're intelligent shows in the way you've worded & spelled in your question. (Disclaimer: I do believe in more than one kind of intelligence--some people are book smart, others are mechanically inclined. Also, lack of spelling/writing ability doesn't imply lack of intelligence; my dad doesn't spell well, but he's a genius with cars.)

Don't worry, you're a smart person that truly loves to learn. As long as you're able to keep your grades up with your current process, I would say keep doing it that way. Your actual knowledge will take you a long way as opposed to just studying for tests.

I'd say you are very intelligent. You may have a learning disability, which makes it more difficult to learn new things, but you process information very well and have original ideas.

Good luck in all you do!
