There are a few different types of cars which are upgradeable and can be raced on the drag strip.
You have your classic muscle cars: Mustang, Camaro, Corvette etc.
Then you have your rally sedans: Lancer evo, Subaru WRX STI, Dodge SRT-4 neon
Then you have your roadsters: Honda S2000, Pontiac solstice, Mazda MX-5 Miata
Then there are the coupes: BMW M3, Nissan 350z
All these cars are legal, and you really need to set a price range for yourself before you consider any mods you'd like to make.
When you know how much you are willing to pay for your car and what kind of ride you want, then set aside a budget to tweak and get performance upgrades.
