I heard that Fremont street was a bad area. Is this true? If so what makes the area bad?

Who ever told you that is misinformed.

The Freemont or "downtown" is no different than the strip as far as safety goes.

Now if you get off of Freemont street a couple blocks you get in a run down area.

Remember, Downtown is twice as old as the Strip and they don't recylce properties there like the do the Strip (implode old casino and build another casino in its place).

You WILL find better Blackjack and looser slots downtown because thats what they have to offer instead of the plush mega-resort like the Strip properties do.

You will be fine downtown

If i was you i would only go down to the Fremont street experience in the daytime, I know i used to work down on Fremont street for over a year and let me tell you that at night is when the hooker's, pimp's and drug dealers come out to play. I always saw at least 2 polices cars screaming by and at least an couple of ambulance's. It is fun and OK to stay by the major hotels like the golden nugget but don't stray to far down Fremont because it could get ugly, but the good part about nigh-time is that there are many other people out on the street's, it is just a few bad people that mess things up.

Just stay in the area where the casinos are. There are lots of security people on bicyles, so it's not a bad area. Don't go off down the side streets alone after dark if you are worried. There are some homeless people around, but they won't bother you. Fremont Street is a fun experience with lots to do.

Go down there and have a good time!

Fremont Street is not bad it's just different than the strip.

The hotel and casinos on the strip are bigger an newer so some people tend to think this is better.

At Fremont Street you may find a friendlier casino or just more of a personal atmosphere. Its all subjective.

I tend to like the strip it's all crowded at times, but I find the larger casinos open and airy.

So if you are referring to being bad as in style there you are if you meant as bad as in getting mugged or fights I believe that can happen anywhere. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine.

Enjoy the Fun!

I just got back from Vegas and I'd say that Fremont Street is fine. It's in downtown Las Vegas and many tourists are afraid to go off The Strip.

The area around the Freemont St. Experience is safe. However, go a couple of blocks away, and it's not exactly savory. The Mayor of Las Vegas, Oscar Goodman, is working to clean this up and make it better, but as with any urban renewal, it's not an overnight thing.

I was just there and it was fun and safe. There were lots of people; it was crowded. We walked back to our car in the parkinggarage at about 10:00PM and there was no one there hanging around. Most places in Vegas, especially on Fremont and in hotel parking garages there are police and/or security people patrolling on bikes.

That area is NOT bad, its safe, unles you go down past about 7th or 8th street beyond the hotel areas.

No it is not a bad area. I've been there a lot of times. Crimes happen everywhere and where you least expect it. You are safe there are as about any part in Vegas. Have fun and go there at night so that you can enjoy the large display.

Fremont and the downtown area casinos are alot of fun...kind of a carnival atmosphere. But I wouldn't stray off the main areas. Last summer we were approached by a grifter (I think that's what they call them)...a very "normal" looking man, saying his car needed fixing...and he was "x" amount of dollars short of cash...found out he was scamming people...so beware of that.

i always stay on fremont street.. it's fine. a few more bums than the strip, but they generally mind their own business.. there's plenty of security around anyhow.

now, once you get a few blocks away from the fremont street experience, its a little shadier. (i.e. el cortez, gold spike, western)
