It is in the way that they are brought up. I was tranplanted to Texas and was amazed at how difficult it is to talk to them. If you talk about anything progressive, they just shut off. It really is a social/cultural thing. They don't want to hear it. It is way deeper than you might think. For instance socialist programs like urban commuter trains are not tolerated here. They also tend to laugh at the poor and pollution is "funny". Of course, this begs the question, what about the poor in Texas. They don't vote, ever.

People in New York are exposed to more things different to them on a daily basis. For example if you live in New York you might see immigrants, gays, prostitutes and so all just on the commute to work. So by being more exposed to these things, you begin to see them as more normal and are less offended/scared/annoyed by them.

People in some hick town in the middle of nowhere, where everybody else is just like them causes them to be right wing because they don't understand different things properly. Thus they hold views strongly against the above mentioned things, views typically seen as 'right wing'.

People living in New York are less informed than people in texas. A lot of people in New York are below the poverty line and the libs are the ones that want to waste all of our governments money on them

Lack of education, different standards, prejudice, twisted belief systems all add to reasons people are conservative or liberal.
Many places are less tolerant of people being different. Out in the boonies.. Texans probably experience a lot less of that than a New yorker who is used to the world population pouring into its borders.
Look at the problem in Florida. with all the cubans and their beliefs. Jimmy Carter, a democrat was the president who let them come in without having to go thru immigration, as Castro was abusing their freedoms. but Cubans and their ignorance.. support the republican party candidates who were strongly against their being allowed admitance. Now Fl is over run with Republicans who dont even understand What they are supporting.
thats just an example.
Change and adaptation to the population and events lead to those who stick by their old values or develop new ones that go with the flo..
good luck!

People in Texas are more independent, self-sufficient, and tougher than people in N Y. People in Texas don't want to be cared for from womb-to-tomb by a huge bureauracy that intrudes on every aspect of our lives. People in N Y eat that up. They depend on it so they don't have to work as hard as the people in Texas. They wear themselves out fighting the crowds, getting to work (if they have a job)

Well I don't think many progressive thinkers are also ranchers for one. Large Urban centers like New York are beacons of progressive thought (left-wing), settled rural areas tend to be more set in their ways politically (right-wing), economically and religiously.

Just an opinion though.

Because they are more free wheeling and capitalist than most people. It is a place where people are independant and self sufficient and believe that others should be like them. The area also had a history of invading Mexico and taking part of the country away by making war.

Because people in Texas are smarter than people in New York.

The second answer is so right, Austin is not very "rightwing"

My guess is better schools in Texas.

Many schools in NY are more concerned about the self-esteem of the students rather than teaching civics and critical thinking skills.
