If someone started an online store, do they need to obtain a business license?
Also, does anyone know of any good web sites with all the information I'd need to know about starting such a site? All the legal stuff and whatnot. I can't seem to find anything beyond sites that want your money to buy their "how-to program," disk, book, or join their site for reasons beyond what you are looking for. Where is a decent site with the right info...?
Thanks if anyone has any advice! : )

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* Starting an Online Business For Dummies, 4th Edition by Greg Holden
* How to Start and Maintain A Successful Online Business by Kelly Thornton
* The Complete E-Commerce Book: Design, Build, and Maintain a Successful Web-Based Business by Janice Reynolds
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Legalities all depend on what your locality has to say about it. Some municipalities do not consider the Internet sites "business" whereas many others do indeed consider this.
Unless you're planning to incorporate, it's doubtful you'd need to do little more than keep track of your expenses, income and taxes. If you're selling minor things to people - home made knick-knacks and what-not, then incorporating will become a major headache with monthly filings and all that rot.
Rather if you're doing under $50K in business, you probably can simply get away with just paying your fair share of personal income taxes.

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website.
