There's now't bad about the place (though I ain't been since around 1988/89)..... kind of one of THE must visit places in England. I suppose the best description is it being England's equivalent of going to Las Vegas.

The Blackpool Tower (*sigh* I miss playing in "Jungle Jim's" there) is a MUST visit http://www.theblackpooltower.co.uk/
being just a famous English monument as "Tower Bridge", the Houses of Parliament, the Clock Tower where "Big Ben" is located, Buckingham Palace + the TOWER of LONDON is down in London.

As are the Illuminations

Ok 2 possible reasons I can think of.

One, you were thinking about travelling by Virgin Trains, which are a running joke, or

Two, the people who said it were being snobbish because Blackpool is - to put it frankly - a bit tacky and kitchy, think Coney Island or any older, slightly tatty seaside town and theme park. But if you're not a snob, there's a lot of fun to be had at the seaside, so long as you're not looking for a sophisticated holiday.

There is nothing bad about Blackpool, and anyone who criticises it as being "tacky" is just being a big snob. They are just the sort of people who would rather be at their "little villa in Tuscany" than mix with ordinary folk with ordinary tastes. Ignore them, they criticise anything that makes them feel they have superior taste.

Its a very popular and busy resort town, and targets itself at day-trippers and short-stay holidayers. It is brash, loud, and not at all sophisticated, but that is fine if you know what to expect. Buy a stick of rock, have a drink or two , have a fish supper, have a paddle in the sea, have fun and have a good time!

The problem is not so much Blackpool but what Reasons does he have for insisting that he drag you off to Blackpool? Unless his Mom and Dad are up there, it shows very poor taste.
Go to Stonehenge, Bath, Devon, and Cornwall and leave tacky Blackpool to the Riff Raff and Peons.

There's nothing bad about it, it's just your friend's opinion. A lot of you southerners think that everywhere 'up north' is dangerous or depressing or boring, but it really isn't.
