The division of the world into three sections is outdated and inaccurate, but here's what it breaks down into.
The First World was modern, industrial countries (U.S., Great Britain, France, Sweeden, etc.)
The Second World consisted of communist countries (the U.S.S.R. and China, especially).
The Third World was everyone else (most countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America).

By definition, those countries that are not "Third World" are "First World" or "Second World". First World countries are those with the highest GDP and are the most developed are mostly now post industrial and are mainly in the West, but Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore etc are also First World. Second World countries are middling income countries that are mostly still industrial - many of these are in Eastern Europe, but also include countries all over the world including the Caribbeanm South America, Asia and South Africa.

The terms were originally used as above. First world being the Capitilist west, Second world being the Communist east and Third world being countries not aligned with either.
However in recent times the meanings have changed, and only First and Third worlds are used. First world referred to developed nations with a solid infrastructure, while Third world referrs to poorer less developed countries with no solid infrastructure or a low UN Human Development Index. Although the definitions can vary as they have no quantitative measurements.

"Third-world" is an outdated term that people still use because it is convenient. The First world was the Free, non-communist world. The Second world was the Communist world (Soviet Union, China). The third world was the poor countries in Africa, Asia, and South/Central America who the first two worlds fought over, either diplomatically or with war.

I live in South America. Our countries are described as "Third world" by certain organizations, like UN, or Word Bank or IMF. All of them, call Third world " to Africa, South America, some countries of ASIA. On the contrary, First world. is USA, Europe, Canada . There is no "Second World " status, this is in your imagination.

First world countries are those in NATO (The US, Canada and Western Europe) second world countries are communist ones (USSR, China, Cuba etc), third world countries are everyone else. Nowadays third world is used to describe poor countries, and first world rich ones, and there is no second world.

In a fit of PC overenthusiasm some years ago, a certain car company renamed their "3rd world test track" the "developing world test track".

"first world" is the old world of Europe and Asia, and the "2nd world" is the new world - ie countries supposedly discovered by the aforementioned first world.
