Magazines & websites that cater to the surfer crowd. If you tell them you're in college & doing a paper, I'm sure they'll help you with some statistics.
Look up a surf board manufacturer like Fox and contact their V P of Marketing. If they have a sales department, contact them first and see who you can talk to for five minutes (they'll give you more time) to pick their brain for such statistics.
