When the light bulb base is stuck in the main socket, what should i do?

THIS IS FOR WHEN THE BULB IS BROKEN AND THE BASE IS STUCK IN THE SOCKET...IF YOU DON'T FEEL SAFE, GET HELP.....TURN OFF THE SWITCH AND TAPE THE SWITCH SO NO ONE WILL TURN IT ON...get a winter glove for the hand taking out the bulb base (just to be safe)...get a potato with a pointed end that will match the socket size (just a bit larger) and jam it into the socket...jam the tater into the socket a little so that it grabs the bulb base and any glass sticking up...turn it out using the gloved hand only (just to be safe)....wait a while so any little bit of tater juice is dried before you put a new one in...IF YOU DON'T FEEL SAFE, DON'T DO IT...but I have done this. RIGHTY TIGHTY...LEFTY LOOSEY...TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE AS YOU SEE THE SOCKET.

turn off the light switch


go get a potato

cut it in half

stick the potato into the socket. The metal base of the bulb will pierce the potato and get stuck in there

turn the potato like you would the lightbulb

and it will come out!

leave it alone for a while in case some potato juice is in the socket

STEP 1: Go to the main circuit break box in your house (usually in the basement) and flip the main breaker OFF. It is the largest one and shuts off ALL the power in the house, to be safe.

STEP 2: Forget the potato thing, get a needle nose pliers. Grab one side of the bulb metal and start rotating it. Hold the lamp or whatever it is and slowly unscrew it. I have jammed a scissors in there, opened them up and started turning, and that works.

There is also a tool in major hardware stores that does the trick but don't waste your money on that, how often does a bulb break off really?

First make sure you unplug the light or turn the breaker off then cut a potato in half and push it on to the end of the light bulb filament and unscrew it...works no problem.

I've tried this many times for this problem. Use a half-ed potato, then stick the cut part into the broken base (make sure power is off in breaker) then twist, this should work. If this fails, call an electrician/handyman.

i think you can actually use a potatoe. cut it in half and shove it into the socket to get the light bulb base lodged in the potatoe and turn until it comes out

make sure the switch is off or unplug it if it's a lamp...if it is a light fixture in ceiling or wall throw circuit breaker to that area and try to use a potato. Sounds silly I know, but it worked for me. You just have to kind of work the potato in there. It did take me a while, but I eventually got it.

first off cut the power at the circuit breaker, not just the light switch. next cut a potato in half and stick the potato on the bulb, then unscrew it. DONT FORGET TO TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so you don't get electrocuted turn off the mains if you have any thing like pliers just try to grip the base if you can to make it easier remove part of the light the one that hold up the lampshade. just get a grip on the base and remember to push down and turn.
