It was featured on the Yahoo! Answers home page where it says "featured question." I'm about to add my own answer because I just found an article in New Scientist magazine about the subject. A very interesting question. There is no hard and fast answer, either, so that's probably why there are so many responses - so much room for anecdotes and other people's opinions. Apparently it is also a bit controversial as there are strong emotions about potentially damaging a child's development.

So many things can naturally go wrong to a baby in the womb of a non-drinking mother. It is absolutely asinine to do something that has been
proven to cause birth defects, etc. If you cannot abstain from alcohol for the better of your child for a mere 9 months, then maybe you shouldn't get pregnant in the first place.

Most people don't understand why doctors say not to drink when you are pregnant. One drink won't cause fetal alcohol syndrom, it's the fact that most people can't stop with just one drink. Not only that, but to see someone ask a question like that, to me, in need of some education.

Because it's so dangerous to the baby. Even one drink can cause birth defects. Some believe a little alchol never hurt anything after all some of our parents or grandparents didn't have to deal with abstaining from alchol or cigarettes. But further research has shown that these things can cause lifelong disabilities and even death. When your pregnant you no longer have just yourself to think about.

basically people are misinformed when it comes to the dangers of alcohol and the fetus...The thing is that we really dont know what amount of alcohol is OK so the professionals say not to have any alcohol while pregnant...A glass of wine on your birthday and some champagne on New Years Eve is more than acceptable...If the occassional drink were really all that evil than most of us over the age of 30 would be suffering from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome...Think about it..our mothers were encouraged to have a glass of wine to reduce stress and wouldnt of thought a thing about having a glass of wine with dinner...Im NOT condoning drinking while pregnant. It is always better to be safe than sorry.BUT for those people who want to have a celebratory glass of wine its important for them to know that they arent going to hell in a hand basket or doing undue harm to their baby. Parents go through enough guilt as it is....

I guess we're really concerned that girls and women are not educated, and might possibly do damage to their unborn children.
