It helps , Im sure but you can do it on your own, connections do help. Try doing summer stock. Getting your pic up somewhere.
If you're really pretty get a portfoilio and send it in to Ford modeling or Wihelmina or something like that Good Luck.

Sure you can, but it's very very very very unlikely that you will. Best thing to do is to start with really small indie films where they don't pay you anything. Build up a cv and find an agent.

yes, good. You can use internet to promote yourself. You can be an internet personality and become huge, famuous without ever having to appear on tv.
