Yes, I believe it exists & it sounds like you experienced it. I'm sorry about your graddad, perhaps he was just trying to tell you goodbye, but all he could do was wake you.

In you I have found a kindred soul. I am or rather was not a believer in extra sensory perception. However, I had a couple of experiences which I cannot fit in the mould of my thinking.

The first was fifteen years before my daughter's marriage in 1975 ie. approximaely around 1960. She was just a child and nothing was farthter from our thought than her marriage. She had also warned us not to raise this matter since it may upset her. So we were very careful. And then one night had this dream wherein I saw a Marriage Invitation care of her marriage. The name of the bridegroom was written large in it. I narrated this dream to my wife and daughter just as a joke and nothing else and we soon also forgot it. And then in 1975 there was a 'mangni' for her by none other than the box whose name had appeared as bridegroom on the dream card. The marriage took place soon after and she is leading a happy married life. With us we have to seek suitable matches for our daughters. Love marriages are rather uncommon.Accordingly I had been on the lookout for boys but I distinctly remember that before this last proposal there was no proposal from any boy of the same name.

Again one night my former boss (who had long retired and as you know very little contact remains with each other) appeared in my dream and we just had a chat and then he left. We were not on good terms in service but I had once met him after his retirement and I was emotionally touched by the lonely existence he was having, having lost his wife and quarreled wih his only son.It was indeed pathetic. But that was a momentary feeling and I had long forgotten it. And then on the next day of the dream I learnt about his sad demise the previous night.

If you can get a book entitled 'An Experiment with Time( Sorr,I have forgotten the name of the author but it is a famous book published some sixty years back). The author has had similar foretelling dreams. Normally we do not remember our dreama the following morning. This author because of such significant seances disciplined himself to wake up immediatel8y after the dream(this can be done by strong auto-suggestion) and note down the contents. To his surprise he found that there were some dreams which cast shadown of the coming events. To find out if this were a gift uniue to himself or a general gift he asked some of his friends to follow his routine. He was surprised to note that they also had similar experiences. On the basis of these experiences he built up a Theory of Time. According to hijm Time is like an escalator and we are standin on it with out back towards the ascendance. We can of course see where we have come from but not aware where we are going. The escalator is in the meantime moving continuously. He felt that sometimes, during our dreams, we just turn our head over our shoulder just enough to see where we are going. Only a wee bit. This is the seance we sometimes see. He holds that this is due to peculiar nature of time where the past(the escalator side we are facing)exists as we can see. But the future also exist and is revealed to us partially during our dreams

It is rather difficult to accept this view of preordained time. As they say in Sanskrit 'As imagined by God' It militates against human initiative . But the theory does not necessarily suggest that we do not play any part in the shaping of the future. In fact our ascension is our action in life and the future is the outcome which we glimpse slightly during dreams. However, sci-fi writers rather depict the future to come is already fixed. Even if we were to travel back in time on a Time Machine to the period of, say.the assasination of President Lincoln and prevent the sharpshooter to shoot him a bullet would come out from another revolver to do the fell deed. It is reasonable to say that the guy who shot the President was only a symbol of the anger of the South and the shot was bound to come out one way or the other.

Maybe he chose you to be the one to say goodbye to. If that's the reason for waking and not being able to sleep again, that's an honour. Maybe he had a special soul tie with you and you were unaware of it until last night. Whatever it was, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about,
