Hope this helps. I have a long-distance card I bought at Sam's Club Warehouse with AT&T. It costs less than 3.5cents/minute. If you've never used one of these cards before, it can be kind of a pain. I dial an 800 number on the back of the card, enter the p.i.n. that is on the back of the card, then dial the number I'm calling. I've had the same card number for years and have all the numbers memorized, so I don't even have to look at the back of the card anymore. As long as i only use a private phone, I'm only charged one unit (3.5cents) per minute. If i use a payphone, there is a connection fee, usually 10 units. If you are not a very patient person, this may not be a good idea for you. (My dad had one of these cards, and now can't stand it, even though they are so cheap to use...he does not have the patience.)

Also, if you are low-income, you may qualify for a subsidy on your telephone line (not internet). Call your phone company and ask if they participate in subsidies for low-income customers. There is usually a form they can mail/email you. Do you have cable in your area? When I lived in Council Bluffs, it was cheaper to get my internet, cable, and phone through the local cable company. Good luck!

If you have a cell phone, use that for long distance...if you have cable, a lot of companies dont charge that much for internet if you already use them for cable. Use you phone for local calls only.
