What do you mean, on it's battery or are you referring to the longevity of a Laptop with regards to a PC?

Laptops in quality IMHO, go from HP, IBM, Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, Acer then others

I used to have to repair most of those makes

Spare parts are VERY expensive, and often usefull to get a raised docking station to let in better airflow for cooling, this will extend life considerable.

Don't worry so much about power surges, as the separate PSU isolates the Laptop pretty good, and the PSU is cheap to replace.

Your laptop will work fine until the day after the warranty expires.
Get an Alienware laptop because they ARE the best out there.
Toshiba, HP and Dell all suck.

Here is a hint for the Toshiba when you eventually do have to use restore disk.
When laptop is starting up, put the restore disk in and press the letter C key until restore disk starts running. The restore disk for Toshiba laptops does not run automatically like every other computers restore disk.

I have been using my Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop for almost a year now, for about 3-5 hours a day, and I have not experienced any problems with it. I'm sure you heard of the Peter Principle, which says, that if anything can go wrong, it will, at the worst possible moment.
Anything electo-mechanical can go wrong at anytime. I'm sure you have heard of cases of people who no sooner cleared the car lot where they picked up their brand new car, and the car stops running for no apparent reason.
