two reasons:
1) They have you right there, so it's like a monopoly supplier of food.
2) The studios take like 95% of the ticket profit, but the theaters can have 100% of the stuff they sell at the movie once you've bought the ticket. They don't make hardly any money from the tickets.

First you have to take into consideration the amount of money it costs to run the theatre.... overhead, utilities, and employee salaries.... that adds up quickly. Also... less people now go to the movie theatre because there are so many other alternatives to paying outrageous prices for seeing your favorite movie on the big screen. Now it takes about 3 months for a new movie to appear for sale in stores.... so most people decide to just wait. You are also paying for the atmosphere.... theatres have big speakers and big screens.... people are willing to pay for that little bit extra.

So the theater can make money, naturally... and because people will still go and pay for what they want, regardless how insane the pricing is.

I took my son to see Monster House yesterday and it cost the two of us over $25 to see the movie, complete with popcorn and drinks.
