Most people usually paint baby rooms with pastels or light colors such as pink, blue, green or yellow. Although you do not have to follow this. There are however alot of studies of how colors effects a baby's (or anyone for that matter) brain and emotions. You don't have to go with traditional colors but I would stay away from darker colors.

The question is answered clearly and there is alot of information about the effects of colors.

Especially with no windows, I'd lighten it up personally. Babies don't see very well, so I would think that a dark room wouldn't be very interesting for them. A lot of people choose pastels because they seem soothing, but b/c babies can't see soft lines and colors, experts say that black and white patterns are the most exciting and that red is one of the first colors they see. (But, I guess you don't really want a baby to be excited at bed time!)
If your sister really wants to keep it dark, maybe she could soften it up with some white or light green drapery or pictures or a border so that the baby could see the contrast btw light and dark and it would brighten the room a bit too. (Just be careful with long drapes b/c they could get tangled and become a choking hazard.)

personally, i wouldnt choose it but i think its fine - the only colors to me that are bad are colors that are too stimulating - bright red, bright yellow, bright multi-colored stuff, anything neon - that sort of thing - if you want your kid to sleep at night, then soothing is the way to go - if the room is too stimulating, the baby will have a hard time sleeping...oh, and by the way...a dark color with no windows might actually be a good thing- many parents have a hard time getting their kids to sleep when it is still daylight in the evenings (especially summer months) or during naps because of the sunlight...their baby wont have that problem! His room with always be dark! So, hey look on the bright side! (no pun intended!!)

Newborn babies cannot see very well so bright contrasting colors would be best if you want the baby to see them when you first bring them home. Otherwise whatever you wish!! Just take my advice and get some room darkening shades. They'll come in handy at 6 am when the sun is up, but you don't want to be.

If you don't know the sex of the baby, I like red, blue and purple - not pastels and not primary colors, but nicely muted. It is not bad for the baby if the colors are dark. It is bad for the baby if no one takes care of the baby - which you already are doing.

it depends on how will be used the room...
if he only sleep there... you could use dark color.
But if he will play, and live on the daylight there... It will be better to use lights colors (that will wake up and happyness their brain)...
I advise you pastels colors, to don't be so hard for him (her)...
better green or salmon or yellow color, than blue or red...
But you know.... You may choose yourself.. look at, if the behaviors of your baby change, perhaps it was not a good choice !!! :)....
Your feeling is perhaps better than everything explain here !!!!!!!
I hope I help you... bye bye...

I reccomend primary colors like red, blue, green, yellow, etc. This will help your baby get familiar with colors they will see all through preschool and elementary. Primary colors also trigger certain signals in the brain.

Lighter shades of course are more calming. Start with a nuetral tone and as the baby gets older they will have their own preferences. My son responds better to light blue than red. But PLEASE make sure to only use non-toxic paint!

dark colors are relaxing for the baby because they are not used to light and light may scare them a bit. pink and yellow are disturbing colors for a small child
