A quarter can refer to three months of a year; this is typically when earnings are announced. A quarter can also refer to a stock price...if it's up a quarter, that's 25 cents. A contract is simply an agreement, and you're probably thinking of futures contracts; basically that's agreeing to a certain price at some point in the months to come. Shares of company are bought and sold daily. After opening an account with any brokerage company, either on-line or traditional, you can place orders to buy shares in any publicly traded company. If you buy 100 XYZ Shares at $10 a share, you'll pay $1000 plus a commission to your broker. Likewise when you sell, you'll also pay a commission; hopefully when you sell, you will get more than your paid for your shares and make a profit. The Yahoo! Finance page also has plenty of info for you. Try selecting stocks just for fun to see how you do... don't use real money. As your experience grows and you begin to feel confident, then consider investing. A word to the wise: Mutual Funds are basically professionally managed money and can be a great choice for investors in the long run.
