Well, it will depend on quite a few considerations. Twenty-one or twenty-nine? Let's say you are making $26,000/year which is probably the lowest that one could call decent under the best of circumstances. Are you going to be able to improve that? Because $26,000 with a potential over the next 20 years to advance in position and salary to $126,000 is just fine. But making $45,000 a year right now and have no place to go from here in a dead end job isn't so good.

How about benefits? $26,000/yr with a 401K, two weeks paid vacation, paid sick days, personal days, full medical, dental etc. compared with $36,000/yr with no benefits is a no brainer. I'll take the first.

So potential and benefits are two areas which are going to affect your answer alot. Good Luck!

If you live in a fairly expensive urban area, you need to either make a good salary, or increase your salary by marrying someone. Check the price of houses and "qualifying incomes" for mortgages in your area.

What is your level of training and education? These factor in to earning potential, also the blue collars white collar segment needs consideration.. My son is 26, he has extensive training is Hazardous conditions working around Power Lines, he grossed $65,000 last year. He went through additional training and furthered his education and will probably gross 70-100K in the next 5 years. Food for thought.
