Expect a wonderful time, as long as you are smart about your belongings and stay at the resort. My husband and I honeymooned there three years ago and adored every second. We left the resort one evening and felt fairly unsafe.

I am still amazed at the people who come up with these rediculous answers about something they probably know nothing about.
1. Everything is NOT twice as expensive as anywhere else. It's much cheaper.
2. The person who said be careful because people will stick drugs in your pocket? I think they got that from "Brokedown Palace". What would someone gain by doing that?
Expect to have a great time. Enjoy the food. The water is warm, and it hasn't been poluted like the water in the U.S. They are part of the Green Planet. They are very environmental. I just came back in May from Negril, it was the second time in Jamaica for me. I love Jamaica. I love the people. I love the food. I can't wait to go back.
The one bit of advice I would offer, is if you plan on shopping for gifts, or even for yourself; wait until you leave. The airport has everything you might want to buy, and I have found that their prices are actually less expensive than the "shopping trip" they offer at the resorts. Even the alcohol it much cheaper.
Go there with a good attitude and you will find you'll have a great time. Go anywhere with a bad attitude, and you will probably have a crummy time.
Like attracts like.
Enjoy your trip. I know I can't wait to go again!

I'm planning a trip to jamaica in three days (hooefully i can go i havent got any passports yet) My Husband is from Jamaica. I never been but since i planning on going i have done a little research. Almost any vacation area thats advertise on t.v. might be safe be agreeable jamaica is a very poor country and i had family just coming back that told me the tourist want even take you to certain area because the crime rate particular kingston heres the actual clip from the internet www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2032.htm
POLITICAL CONDITIONS
Jamaica's political system is stable. However, the country's serious economic problems have exacerbated social problems and have become the subject of political debate. High unemployment--averaging 15.5%--rampant underemployment, growing debt, and high interest rates are the most serious economic problems. Violent crime is a serious problem, particularly in Kingston
Thats the actually phrase dont take my word go to the website. Vacation at a resort in my opinon great,m but to travel outside the resorts or to live definitely not.

Take the bad reviews and throw them away. those people have not been there, now the other reviews just pay attention to what they are saying, as Jamaica has the nicest people in the world, who just happen to be poor, they will try and sell you things, goods. but this is how they make there money, just politely say no thanks, and always keep moving, just be polite. at least there are no time-share people pushing that crap at you. we walked around outside the resorts, and it was fine. like any where in the world and United States you have to use common since and street smarts, there is always one bad apple out there. but for the most part you will be fine. the worst thing is the people are real persistent of selling there goods, but again they are very poor and Jamaica's number 1 income is tourism

Be aware as you would in any other foreign country or unsafe areas in what ever country you live in. Be cautious, smart don't buy drugs, do foolish things. Pay the money for a good hotel and transportation but also do not seclude yourself from the people, they are nice and you may have a good time and learn something about someone other than yourself. It's a beautiful country you'll get great pictures, but it also obviously has bad areas as every where else.

Try staying inside a nice resort. I stayed at the Hedonism II, in Negril, and it was really nice. Be careful at the airport... they will offer you marijuana (aka Ganja) just by the side of the officers. Out of the resort there are no guarantees, but you can have a really nice trip. The person that answered that a coke is $5 haven't been there... you can get a hooker for that money, Jamaicans are very poor people. Have a nice trip!

Expect aggressive vendors, beautiful beaches, turquiose water, delicious food and great entertainment. It is a great vacation spot, whereever you go. As with any place, be carefull where you go and be aware of your surroundings. The people are very friendly, but can get a little pushy to buy their shop items. You don't really have that problem within the resorts. The men are OVERLT friendly to the women, whom they hope to have one of theose "Terry McMIllian" romances. Enjoy yourself and expect the best.

Beautiful place! Wish I were you in this case. It is slower than most islands (Bahamas, Puerto Rico, etc) Beware of mixing outside the resort. Like anyplace else, people will scam you if you aren't wary. Stick to the resort for booking escursions/activities and you should be fine.

I was in Jamaica almost ten years ago. You should have no real problems. Many people never even leave their resort, but we did and still had no problems.
