Why is it not possible that God created the earth and put everything in place for evolution to happen? Why can they not be combined? If there is a God, would He not be smart enough to come up with a way for the world to grow? ie: evolution

I'm with you. Science and religion are not opposites. God created science, just like He created everything, and evolution, like erosion or any onther natural force, is part of science. There is no doubt that humans, just like all lifeforms, have evolved over time - but this doesn't mean that God didn't create us. Being created in his image is a reference to intelligence and emotion - the ability to love others and use reason in addition to instinct.

The clash between evolutionists and Christians arises because the Bible states that God created the animals as we see them around us, and this is inconsistent with current scientific evidance.

You also have to remember that when you introduce God into scientific thinking, advancement of that thinking ceases. You get to a point where you don't know the answer, and instead of researching and discovering, you just sit back and say that God did it. The more scientists question and push back the boundaries of our knowledge of how the universe works, the less room there is for God.

Look at it like this: 'God created the earth', says the religious man.
'Actually', says the scientist, 'the earth was created by the gradual process of interstella dust from a previous supernova being attracted to each other and forming into a compressed mass'. 'Okay', says the religious man, 'then God made the dust form the way it did'. 'Well', says the scientist, 'the dust formed in keeping with the laws of gravity, as described by this formula'. 'So God created the gravity', says the man. The scientist does a bit more research, comes back and says, 'gravity is acutally created when a mass bends the fabric of the space/time it is inhabiting . . . ' and so on.

When you introduce God, you stop asking, 'yes, but *why*?', and you stop progressing.

Ah the thing with God and evolution. Actually starting with Pope John Paul II, he has said that it is ok for Catholics like me, to believe in evolution. The only catch is that we must believe God set the plan into action that way. That is one thing I have alway believed. We can not deny that there were things here before humans and that the earth is extremely old. To deny that would be very naive and not a logical move due to the overwhelming evidence that things existed before us.
What needs to be done is for religions to realize being loyal to your religion is all good, but when you are an extremeist and fail to see logic or at least say its a possibility, then your credibility is gone. What I like to do is have a logical backing for religious arguements since it makes them more valid.
Logically it would make sense for there to be some supreme being who set into motion the events to create the universe. I know many will think well how did that beign come here or what was here before it? I think its a logical compromise that God started evolution.

I do believe in both evolution and in intelligent design. I don't understand why Christians are so opposed to evolution. They miss the fact that someone or something had to have put the forces in motion for humans to evolve. Why can't they believe that God created evolution? The process of evolution does serve a purpose (ie-survival of the fittest) and it provides a way for living things to adapt & survive in an ever changing environment. Face it, the "theory of creation by God" in and of itself makes absolutely no sense!!! We have scientific facts that disprove it. Concrete facts, not theories. People need to open their minds and ask themselves "does this really make sense?".

Wow, finally a free-thinking Christian. OF COURSE it's possible! But the fundamentalists will tell you otherwise, apparently because, if you interpret the Bible literally, it's not what happened! How great of you to allow for that possibility! After all, He's supposed to be God, right? Could He not have allowed for the slow and ingenious perfection of all of His species through time?? Of course He could have!

haven't you heard of the theory of intellegent design?
