I suppose that trying to see where are you coming from is natural, but in my personal opinion after having visited a few African countries, and the US, I do not see much in common between both populations excepting the color. In that case the white Americans should organize trips to Ireland, Poland, Germany, France, Israel, Italy, Russia China, and of course Great Britain. Or is just out by coincidence that in the US people talks English???
Do not get it wrong, but the ones who were selling Africans as slaves could have been other Africans, but the big money was made by white people in all the chain till the auctions. Shame on them, what a shitty way of being lazy sending somebody else to do the hard work as an animal against their will......
Even now exists slavery, mostly from Asia. Have you ever listen anything about it?
I am white, an outsider living overseas.
Nevertheless I cannot believe that till not so many years ago, the African Americans were going to the war to remain in the kitchen. Are you surprised then that having such a background the Americans descendants of that oppressed population would like to dream about a place where they are majority, not discriminated?

Because it is their motherland . Why do adopted people look for their birth parents even though they gave them up for adoption. You are a naive or at least not very well thought out individual. Blacks in America have a lot in common with Continental Africans. The colonization of Africa wasn't a peaceful event . Many people were killed and enslaved by Europeans in the process. There is a middle class in Africa that actually lives better then some Americans here. My cousin has traveled to many countries there and brought back pictures ,videos and many stories. The constant poverty crap ( flies hovering around starving AIDS baby's ) they like to show on the nightly news is media spin. We've got a lot of that here too. Believe it. I hear India and parts of Russia are worst then Africa.

The fact that some Africans were involved in the kidnapping and selling of other Africans into slavery does not negate the fact that African Americans descended from Africans.
As a Mutt American I'm interested in visiting the various countries and learning more about the people groups from which I descended. Maybe it's just a personalized version of a love for history.

I don't know what some of the people who answered this questions are talking about. African Americans have everything in common with Africans, excluding language and parts of their culture. The reason we don't have the same language and culture is because we were taken from our land. Regardless of who took us from our land , the fact still remains that we were taken from it. We as African Americans need to visit where we came from, our roots and our people.

Well, if the situation were reversed and some psychos sold you, then would you still think of your country as your motherland?

It is their roots.
Their immediate motherland is the USA. Their roots go back 200 years.

I agree, American blacks have almost NOTHING in common with Africans. No shared culture, language, or ideals. If American blacks knew the history of the slave trade and the conditions of life in Africa versus teh luxeries of USA, no way in their right minds would they ever leave.

To find something out of thier roots to be proud of. You can't write off your heritage because there were some bad apples in the bunch.
