A generation ago, it was common for people to have moth problems and have moth balls in their closets. Those people are getting old...and are still using moth balls.
When you get old, I am sure some young person (who have never heard of moth balls) will wonder why is that old guy still using an ipod.

Old people's houses smell like mothballs for all the reasons stated in the other posts. HOWEVER, if the smell is really strong, they should be told to get rid of some of the mothballs, since it is a strong, toxic chemical (camphor or naphtha???) that can cause lots of health problems. They need to give their home an airing out for their own sake.

I'm getting old and I keep mothballs in my underwear, even when I have them on!!!!! I don't want the moths to get me BUT, I do have a mothball odor about me, even when I go out. My wife smells like garlic because she is afraid the werewolf will get her LOL......... WTFAITA?
Mothballs were used years ago to keep moths from eating choths that were stored for periods of time! I am old enough to know this, I am a boomer!!!!!!

Agree with Stephen B.
In the good old days, wool clothing was popular. Good wool clothing wasn't cheap, so people tend to keep them: need moth balls for that.
