FEAR seems to be the outstanding answer.

TripleDigit67....

Sorry. I'm a straight woman in Los Angeles, so that knocks out most of your stupid answers.

If I ever saw you do anything hurtful to anyone, be they gay or straight, I would have to take you down myself.
Don't f*ck with an angry woman who's a blackbelt. You'd be the laughing stock of Fort Smith.

People fear that which they do not understand. A lot of straight people just cannot understand or relate to how a person can be attracted to someone of the same sex... it feels unnatural to them. For that reason, it threatens them. Condemnation comes from this collective fear and lack of understanding.

There was a time in this nation's history when people of color were condemned, and they had to deal with prejudice and bigotry. (Not to say that they don't still have to deal with it, mind you.) But now we can look back in history and realize how wrongly society treated these people, and we can learn and grow from that wisdom. Now, we are at a time in history when gays and lesbians are dealing with the same kind of prejudice and bigotry. Hopefully we as a society, will grow to realize that this is the case, and that, as the Declaration of Independence says, "All men are created equal". (I don't believe it says anything about all STRAIGHT men are created equal.)

By nature, humans are scare of different things. So when there were gay people, people were like "Woah! That's different! I like the opposite sex but they like the same, weird!" and were scared because they didn't understand. So, like what happens with a lot of things of this kind, they thought "It must be wrong if it's different, let's use religion to condemn it!". After a while, different things get more and more accepted through understanding but there are some people who don't like change or different things still and choose not to understand (ignorancy) and/or are very religious and hang on to what the bible says, since other homophobes use it to say gay is wrong. Then the homophobes have children, and this child, where in today's modern world, might grow up to accept homosexuals, the parents intervene and influence the child's thoughts with their own and the child grows up being taught gay is bad. The chain continues when these people have children and teach their children to e homophobic and they have children and etc.

Most homophobic behavior/attitudes are based on widely held religious dogma rather than true spirituality. Almost everyone has experienced "tingles" at one time or another toward someone of the same gender. Unfortunately, the guilt associated with this natural feeling is a form of self hate that is often acted out on others as "gay bashing". It's tragic that so many religious institutions capitalize on a person's lack of self respect.

So called 'pro-lifers' truly believe that each and every sperm is a life that has a right to live, thus they are against all forms of non procreative sex. They want to see Earth's population soar above the ten billion mark. Other people are homophobic because or desires sequestered in their minds, by hating others they can deny their own feelings. It is easy to criticize Christians for most of the phobia against sex.

I believe that society has taught them to be that way. Religion is a large factor- also people tend to be naturally afraid of those who are different. It's myths about homosexuals who go around raping children, or that they're perverts (most petofiles are heterosexuals, heterosexuals are at least a permiscuous and perverted as any homosexual). If children are conditioned to think these things or just to generally dislike/fear homosexuals, that will be their view. Liebe und Frieden. We can make a difference.

The three main things fuelling homophobia are:

1. Fear/Misunderstanding - misconceptions about homosexuals.
2. Religion - people who feel that their religion calls upon them to speak out against same sex attraction.
3. Denial - some people use homophobia to prolong denial of their own feelings.

Well, some will say that they are homophobic because they are closeted homosexuals, and while this may be true in some cases, I think that generally it's the fear of the unknown and different.

I don't think there are as many homophobics as you would like to believe. The word homophobic means....A fear of homosexuals. Just because a person does not accept the homosexual behavior of an individual, that doesn't mean they are homophobic.

I wish I knew. I have never been homophobic yet my parents were to some degree. So it is not because of background that I picked not to be. I often feel with men that they are not sure of their own sexuality and then they start being homophobic but that is just my idea.

They may be scared of someone being different or unusual, also they may feel insecure and be worried that they will be "converted" to Homosexualism. Which we all know is impossible. I think if someone is homophobic they are more then likely racist because of being insecure around black or hispanic people or can't face change.
