And if evolution is still going on why are no Monkeys evolving? Or any other animal in this case... And now that humans have it so easy what do you think they will be their next form of evolution. I mean we drive in cars. Humans were meant to be runners... How do you think this will effect our next evolution stage....

First of all this is a good question and I hate it when people make fun of you for asking it.

Humans are primates and evolved from apes which in turn evolved from monkeys. The key to understanding why monkeys are still around is the fact that an earlier species is not necessarily the weakest. Here weakest is defined by the environment and not necessarily in terms of bodily strength (muscle) or brain. Some of the earliest creatures like cockroaches are the most successful and still continue to survive. In this case if the environment is an arboreal environment like rain forests then monkeys are better suited than humans. Humans cannot climb. Now given the environment monkeys have no need to evolve. A monkey born in the rain forst with capabilities like a human being will most likely not survive long (due to inability to climb).

Humans on the other hand evolved when apes ventured into grasslands where it was essential to stand erect to see predators and see far enough to bring down prey.

Humans (homo sapiens) have been around for an extremely small period of time and civilization as we know it started only about 7000 years back. This might sound like a lot of time but is hardly anything for evolution. So monkeys being around is no surprise. They are slowly being hunted down to extinction.

On the other hand if your question is more like why are monkeys still around but not early man (like neanderthels) then you should look at the competition. Homo sapiens (modern man) and the other species (neanderthel) that evolved from the common ancestor were competing in Europe for the same set of resources and habitat. Homo sapiens had a power tool called language and won the evoluationary game which made the neanderthels extinct.

Now if you observe closely - monkeys live on trees in the rain forests and are not really in direct competition with humans for their arboreal habitat. So they continue to live. However with humans requiring more space are destorying forests which in turn is driving monkeys to extinction.

Nobody really knows what the next species is going to be. It takes millions of years. Unfortunately one can only speculate. In fact there are a series of programs on National Geographic on this where they talk about what could happen next. Imagine if there were a massive drop in temperature (close to 100 deg C) probably all of mankind will perish with probably more than 99% of species on earth. Probably only bacteria will survive something like that to repopulate earth and evolve into something totally different. In short it is not totally right to believe that humans have it easy. We may drive in cars which might look very powerful in comparison to the rest of animal world but what is totally stable (evoluationary wise) is probably not what one sees.

Hope your question is answered!

The monkeys we see today were not the same as those who split off from the genetic tree of which we were a part. We did not "evolve from monkeys", and in fact, you have to go back pretty far to find a common ancestor.

The reason that you don't see other species evolving is because you aren't thinking on a long enough time scale. If you were a paleontologist, you would be able to see change and evolution in the fossil record, but you aren't, and can't, unless of course you do some serious research, which, manifestly, you haven't.

In my opinion, humans stopped evolving with the advent of agriculture. Being able to fend for ourselves with our wits, rather than our brawn, the typical driving forces in conventional evolution are removed.

Monkeys didnt stop evolving silly rabbit.

What you arent understanding is how evolution works.

The process of evolution is thousands and millions of years -- while the human life span is less than a hundred.

How do you expect to observe evolution in the present and future?

Of course its going to appear as if it has stopped unless you have a time machine or something to make you live for a few million years..

So far we can only observe evolution going backwards in time.

Using your perspective we could also say that tectonic plates have stopped moving -- well almost -- the change is a lot quicker than evolution. But on a bigger scale you still have the 7 main continents.

But I can guarantee one thing, in a million years, we wont have the same contintents that we do now. They'll all have moved.

That guy under me is a jerk. We didnt evolve directly from monkeys but we have a very recent common ancestor in our evolutionary tree.

===================

They do, sort of. Though they are not on the same evolutionary track that humans are/were on (I say were because since our survival is independent of our environment, we no longer evolve as a species). We merely have a common ancestor. Monkeys evolved to live in trees where they climb.

You could also ask why don't we have tails..

You thought is slightly flawed. Why do monkeys have to stand upright? A species evolution is dependent entirely on the environment in which it thrives or dies. If the environment in which they thrive is more suited to climbing then the climbers live and the walkers die. If the environment is more suited for walking then the climbers die and the walkers live. Why don't monkey lives in the ocean?

Monkeys haven't stopped evolving. Anything evolves, if it occupies an ecological niche in which conditions change. That's almost every species alive today.

Why don't monkey's evolve to walk upright? Because monkeys are arboreal animals that inhabit rainforests, where upright walking is no advantage to survival. Baboons, on the other hand, have recently moved from the forest to the savannah, so over time it's likely that they will evolve into more upright animals.

Monkeys haven't stopped evolving, they just don't evolve fast enough for you to notice. Come back in a few thousand years, you might see some changes. If they still exist, that is.

Why indeed didn't all monkeys evolve to human form? Well, why would they? Evolution is not a fixed path to human form, it's just a mechanism of change. Whatever survives, thrives.

First leave Jason alone, it is just that his kind hasn't evolved yet cause they don't do that sort of thing. One day they'll be like us and better for it. But, I love the believers in things they cannot prove, I like selling them "waterfront" property in south Florida :P

Anyway...

The current species of monkey [no, I do not know the Latin based nomenclature like Simeon or whatever] is not the species of monkey we evolved from. The species we evolved from is now extinct since homo sapiens replaced it. However, evolution is proven in my mind since all mammals (not just primates and humans which are like 97+%) have something over 90% similar DNA. To me that definitely implies a common source or origin.

Monkeys and apes (the ones with out the tails, like us), evolved from a normal ancestor, hundreds of thousands of years ago. Chimpanzees and people DNA is about ninety nine% the equal. We evolved to fill an evolutionary niche, as did monkeys. Monkeys are living in bushes, and have advanced to be victorious there. They are able to grip with palms and ft, and plenty of can with their tails as well. They are well suited for their environment. It is less clear how humans acquired to be the way we are. We seem to have left the bushes (assuming we have been each there), and began to walk extra upright. Used to be this to see prey/predators in savannah? Some propose that we started by means of dwelling next to the ocean or a body of water, and ate quite a lot of fish. Apparently an enzyme in fish can support within the development of intelligence. We ate fish, and acquired sensible! However, i have also noticeable some work that about ninety five% of our food plant meals are people who thrive at the foot of cliffs and hills. The recommendations is that we lived in caves (perhaps for protection), and gathered what we might to find neighborhood. This is it sounds as if still reflected within the foods that we eat.

Monkeys stay in bushes, and function developed to achieve fulfillment there. they can grip with fingers and ft, and many can with their tails to boot. they're nicely appropriate for his or her surroundings. that is a lot less sparkling how people were given to be the way we are.
