its hard to say/.but he played decent that year although he was sidelined a few times because of his knees/being a starter and a star all throughout his career it may have hurt his ego to be a sub instead of a starter so this may have contributed to his decision to retire/but in the end i think you are right/he should've gone another year even as a reserve so he could've finally gotten that championship he never experienced in his marvelous career

The Pistol was in bad shape and wasn't that big a factor for the Celtics the season he played there. He had a few scoring feats, but the Celts still would have won the division without him. His skills were declining, he lacked his trademark quickness and the injuries were steadily decreasing the amount of time he could be on the court. If he had stuck it out, he probably would have had no significant impact on the court and rode the bench much of the time. He could have stayed around and gotten himself a cheap ring as a bench warmer, but he probably wouldn't have been in any condition to contribute much of anything to the championship run.

Plus, consider that Boston played a team-first system, and Pete's whole game was built on his performance as an individual player, not really the best fit for the Celts. It's possible that he may not have even lasted another full season in Boston. If his injuries didn't make him hang it up, Boston might have cut him in favor of a player who'd be a better fit or was healthier.

To me Pistol Pete was one of the most amazing athletes to ever play the game. He left behind an incredible basketball legacy. Lack of championships don't detract from that in my opinion.
