it's usually the criteria, however if you want to enter a prestigious program in that college, you may need a bigger GPA.
ex. here in NY, a lot of people are taking up nursing. so almost all the schools are selective here. in one school in manhattan, they require at least a 2.5 GPA to transfer to their school, but if you want to enter the nursing program, you need a 4.0 and that still does not guarantee your entry. so to answer the question, it depends on the demand for that course.
what i would suggest is, since you are in high school, try applying for the college of your choice, but also apply for government or state universities as back up. do your research by finding out the subjects that are required for the course of your choice, and for the first year, what most people do is they enroll under liberal arts to take those minor requirements and build their GPA, then they can transfer the course that they want. that's how i did it. and it's actually better that way. you get better grades and your load is not that heavy.

Oh, a 3.0 is good enough to get into a college. Don't fret a whole lot about your GPA (be sure to keep it a 3.0 or higher!) and concentrate on doing volunteer activities and extracuricular activities--colleges now days are looking for well-rounded students who have a solid GPA (rest assured that a 3.0 is great!) and have other skills & interests as well. Also, most state colleges--to be honest--are if you have the funds, you will get in, and thankfully all state colleges offer great financial aid.
My best advice would be do some extracuricular things you enjoy and discover what it is you like to do, keep your GPA at a 3.0 (or higher if you can!)--apply to your college early (check with your guidance officer)! Oh, and be sure to get some study guides for the SAT and ACT test--a good, solid score on these tests will help you get into a good college as well.
Good luck & enjoy your high school experience! You will do just fine!

I would contact the University of Texas and A & M University and ask them what their criteria is to be accepted at their colleges. Just go to their website and go to the "contact us" area of their website and ask. 3.0 is great but it's not an "A". That does not mean they will not accept you at their college. My brother graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. It has an excellent Business program there. The key here is where do you want to go? You already said Texas, so check on their best schools and contact them for more information. It is your decision to make, not for us to recommend to you. There are excellent schools all over the country and Texas A and M and the University of Texas are great schools. You have already made a good decision by making them stand out in your mind now all you have to do is go for it. Get a hold of them and ask your questions there. Your answers from them at least will be more accurate than ours here at yahoo answers, unless of course you got an answer here from the Dean from the University of Texas or A & M. Good luck in whatever you choose because bottom line, it is your decision!

Dude you can go to any school you want if you try. GPA isnt the end all. If you are involved in other activities, or have other things going on in life those come into account. Universities like students that are well rounded. Having good SATs scores can show that your GPA doesnt have as much weight, or having a lot of responsabilites can show that you attention is in different things and not focused entirely on book learning. These are important its not about GPA

A 3.0 is good enough for most colleges as long as your SAT scores are very good too. Get some of those SAT prep programs and really prepare for that. It is the single biggest thing you can do right now to make sure you can get into a good college.

a 3.0 equates to about a grade of "B". So, it's good, but they don't just look at that. They also look at SAT/ACT scores, extracurriculars, and your application and essays.
These days, it's all about numbers. If you want to go to UT or A&M, then do better and do more stuff because they'll want you more. However, there are certain quotas that colleges have to meet in order to remain accredited. They have to have a certain percentage of minority students and women. So, if you don't get in don't give up, just realize that they may have had to select someone of a different race.

Grades are just one part of the admissions process. There are a bunch of other criteria that they use to decide whom to admit, but a 3.0 is definitely good. And FYI, schools are being flooded with more applicants now than before, so your amount of competition has increased.
