I have a few habits I am keen to break. I've tried before, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

I have this habit of bending my arms and letting my hands hang down when I walk, or just stand around. It makes me look like a total fruitcake. I had will power and everything, but it made no difference since I didn't even realize when I was doing it. So I asked my little sister to tell me every time she saw me putting my arms like that. It felt uncomfortable just having my arms by my sides, but I'm getting used to it. Try asking someone you live with/ see often to tell you when you're doing the habit, and pretty soon you'll start noticing it and stopping yourself w/out help.

The best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with good habit.
Instead of engaging in the bad habit, go for a walk or engage in some other form of exercise... write in a journal... read a book... sing a song... phone a friend... volunteer for a charitable organization... clean the house... wash the car... do some yard work... try a new hobby...

A lot of good answers were already posted, but I just wanted to add that I've heard it takes just 2 weeks to break any habit. Of course, it's not a guarantee. But if you can do it for those 2 weeks, it will become a lot easier to continue afterwards.

There are Three Ways to Break a Habit

1.) Reward: This could be anything good, and makes you happy.

2.) Punishment: Not exactly grounding yourself but close to it.

3.) Excess: Doing something to extreme, until you can't stand it any more

I've heard that it helps if you really want to break a habit. If it's something where a reminder could be helpful do/make something to alert you to the fact that you are digressing.

Be persistent, set goals such as slowly diminishing over time and give yourself rewards when you reach them. Also, have other people remind you of what you are trying to do.

Your WILL must take charge of your mind and your body. YOU must own you. Otherwise you're just another whiner looking for excuses.
