What was the longest running show in television history? It's amazing how many people give the same ridiculous answers that aren't even close. Hope you guys get it better than my brother did. ;)

I worded that wrong. Since there are lots of kinds of shows(animated, sitcom, etc) I should have been more specific. I was looking for longest running sitcom. If you want, tell me the longest running animated show. Whoever tells me both and specifies which is which gets the best answer.

Yeah, the dude's right. It's NBC's 'Meet the Press', first broadcast on November 6, 1947 and broadcast every week since September 12, 1948. Pips 'The Simpsons' by around 42 years.
Interestingly, the longest running children's programme is the BBC's 'Blue Peter', first broadcast 16 October 1958, and the longest running drama is ITV's 'Coronation Street', first broadcast in December 1950.
For my money, though, the most enduring show is the BBC's 'Doctor Who', first aired on 23rd November 1963, and still going strong (after a short nap :) ).
The longest running sitcom is the BBC's 'Last of the Summer Wine', first aired in 1973 and still going, and 'The Simpsons' comes in as the longest running animated show, fiirst aired in 1989 and still going strong.

A long time ago I heard that M*A*S*H won that title. Maybe that's just some long standing rumor... And I don't know if bandaging up old war generals counts as a sitcom, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
Shoot, or did they just have the most watched finale ever recorded? Or something?
Wasn't Cheers up there in the runnings, too?
