Tonight at work, I was $48 under in my float when I counted the money at the end of my shift.
I panicked, and grabbed $50 out of my wallet to make the difference and keep myself out of the bad books. I feel like I'm screwing myself over just to save face.
Did I do the right thing?

If you and only you were responsible for that money, then you probably saved your butt. However, if other people had access to the money, you could get in trouble because your boss might interpret the situation incorrectly and think you were covering for your colleagues. Also, you'd feel pretty bad if they counted tomorrow and found you were over by $50! Don't do it again, but don't worry too much about it now. What's done is done!

Don't know the policies where you work or the actual job you are doing ... but technically speaking ... bad idea ... moving money between your wallet and the company 'til' can easily be mistaken for stealing ... if casually observed, it may look like the cash was going the opposite direction (into your pocket) and if the error that you covered out of your pocket is found in a later accounting or audit process (but your 'til' wasn't out of balance) it could be difficult to explain.

While commendable that you wanted to make the company 'whole' for your shortage and to keep good marks on your job performance, you are falsifying company records.

And financially speaking, cannot afford to cover too many of these occurrences.

If you did it just to save face, then you did the "not-so-good" thing; but if you put the $50.00 because it was your responsibility and you felt you screw up...then you did the "so" very right thing. Your honesty should be admired and trust me, in the long run it would pay you handsome dividends. Honesty is such a golden treasure so scarce in this times we live in. You are a good person! Congratulations.
