Is it really naive to think that people change in relationships or do they just become more of who they really are?

i think you said it there "they become more of what they truely are." Love is blind, when you finally can see how the relationship is going and the results of it, its hard to say well okay, just don't do it again. You know i do believe in second chances but not if the person is doing the samething over and over again ...if they cant stop the first time then you got just move on.

No, people do change. That is the one constant in life... change. The thing is though, in a relationship you either change together, or you grow apart... thats what makes or breaks a relationship in the end. Do you love the person deep down? Cause if you do, then you will adore watching the changes in both of your lives.

people can change

but they have to have a strong desire to do so
you can tell this desire exists if you see persistant action and some improvement

a person can have many failures and backslides and still, over time, be improving and progressing

if there is no real sign of change and no real evidence of desire that includes action, then even one failure might be too many

do not hook your life to someone unless you are willing to be happy with them as they are, or, you see real desire to change, and real progress
