You can't. You might try lightly sanding it with really fine grade sand paper and then just put a light coat of varnihs/polyurathane...over that. But if it's really bad, you'll have to refinish the whole piece.

Go to Sherwin Williams , get a small can of Laquer Retarder- put some on a rag, and rub the area. - but not to much, and don't spill any on the table.
