Yes, a few of my friends have mentioned that they don't tip on tax, which I think is pretty cheap. I think that 15% is pretty standard, although I try to leave 20%, or even more on small tabs. I'm not spending that much more money to leave a good tip, but it does makes a difference to the server. I do agree with what's been said about people who've worked for tips before being better tippers. Once you've had to depend upon the goodwill of other people for your income and had to deal with other people's crap, it makes you appreciate being waited on a lot more.

Oh yes, but rather than creating a problem I make sure they see me add to what they left. When they ask me about it I tell them I thought the server deserved more and also something most people forget is to tip the chef...If you enjoyed the food it is because of the preparation and plating not because the server had a great personality. I always make sure that the maitre d' is complimented and knows that part of the tip is for the chef, so that's what I say.

I have. I call them cheapskate. I usually throw down a couple bucks and try to get close to 20% without sitting there and pondering all day. If I see my buddies toss out a buck on a $20 tab I will tell them to pony up some cash. Unless the service was really bad.

Not with my friends. We all work in the bar industry and those that work in jobs where they get tips tend to be the best tippers. We are also really good at leaving 50 cents when the service was really bad too.

I used to have that problem with my Dad. He always tipped a dollar until just a few years ago.

But, as long as you're asking. I hate more when people ask me how much they should leave. 15 percent is not that hard to figure in your head. It's just 10 percent plus half again. My partner always asks me how much. What am I, a human calculator? Yes, I always figure it easily, but I'd rather that transaction just go smoothly. Figure it yourself!

Yes. However, I have come to realize that a person who stiffs the server is quite selfish and in the long run may not be the best friend to have.

Yes, I have and I do tell them if I think they're being too stingy; usually something like:"Pony up some more dead presidents my friends: Mindy, another $2.00 from you, Joodles, you get a buck back, Greg, come on man, $1.00, what are you thinking?"

of course. Even if the waiter or waitress hasn't been the friendliest. Everyone has bad days, and those people make most of their money off their tips, not their regular wages.

If you are sharing the bill, you tell the group that 20% of the bill comes to such and such each and you add that to the over all bill then split it. If you have someone who objects then they will be embarrassed. this works for me every time.
