Very good question. I evaluate coaches at the college level on comprehensive coaching, ie. Talent, versatility,
academics, recruiting, discipline, draftees & free agents and of course winning.

All things considered I would give the nod to Paterno.
Don't personally care for him or Penn State, but he gets the nod over Bowden because of discipline in his program. They've drawn less negative pub over his tenure than Tressel in his brief one, they have continued to place players in the NFL even through the bad years and they maintain a strong team GPA each yr.

Note however, Mack Brown deserves strong consideration if you evaluate his pre Texas years and what he has done with more than one program.

As much as I hate Ohio State's Jim Tressel, I would have to still go with him. He's a proven winner at every level he has coached on in football, winning national titles and Youngstown State and then going to Ohio State and winning one there when Miami was heavily favored. He has taken the OSU-Michigan game that used to be a toss-up and made it into a joke. After losing most of their best defensive players to draft or graduation last year, they will still be coming into this season ranked 1 or 2. Ohio State's Jim Tressel is THE best coach in college football today.

cosidering the dry recruiting that he's had in the past 4-5 years, and what he's done with that talent, i'd say joe paterno. the guy has to play michigan, michigan state, and wisconsin every year and pen state is no longer the mecca of highschool bluechippers around the country but joey pat still wins every year! guys like bowden are blessed to land the best players coming out of highschool every season, but don't do that much better than paterno... it shows his coaching ability and his knack for molding raw talent into fullblown football machines!

It would have to be Jim Tressel of The Ohio State University Buckeyes. He's beaten Michigan the last four of five times; we won the national title in 2002 going undefeated; since then, we've been a regular feature at the Fiesta Bowl, winning all our bowl games in his tenure, including embarrassing Notre Dame last year. We have two serious Heisman candidates, quarterback Troy Smith and wide receiver/punt returner Ted Ginn Jr. He commands excellence in the classroom, discipline and a team-oriented, family spirit from his players. Plus, we are once again favored to win it all this year.
