Wedding planning is an intense business -- just think of all the bride godzillas you'd be dealing with (plus their mothers and sisters). Plus, you would need a whole list of suppliers to help you plan the business - from bakers to photographers to florists to hotels and restaurants.

The easiest at this point is to intern or assist a wedding coordinator to find out how this business is best done. Or volunteer your services (even free) to friends and relatives so you can get a "feel" about the business.

If you are determined to get into this business, I suggest you check out the following books:

- How To Start A Wedding Planning Business (Paperback)
by Cho Phillips, Sherrie Wilkolaski
- Start Your Own Wedding Consultant Business: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Success by Eileen Figure Sandlin
- FabJob Guide to Become a Wedding Planner (FabJob Guides) by Catherine Goulet
- Great Wedding Tips From The Experts : What Every Bride Can Learn from the Most Successful Wedding Planners by Robbi Ernst III
- How to Start a Home-Based Event Planning Business (Home-Based Business Series) by Jill Moran

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Wedding Specific:
* How To Start A Wedding Planning Business by Cho Phillips, Sherrie Wilkolaski
* Start Your Own Wedding Consultant Business: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Success by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* FabJob Guide to Become a Wedding Planner by Catherine Goulet

Party/Event Planning Specific:
* How to Start a Home-Based Event Planning Business by Jill Moran
* Start Your Own Event Planning Business: Your Step by Step Guide to Success by Krista Turner
* The Essential Event Planning Kit by Godfrey Harris
* Start & Run an Event-Planning Business by Cindy Lemaire

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I noticed some great research ideas on this page, but I would suggest a couple of things. Your local Chamber of Commerce can help you, contact local caterers, churches and rental halls, head of catering at local hotels (big ones). Get out and meet people, tell them your plans, actually working at a hotel or catering company could provide you with hands on experience. Good luck.

Many colleges offer diploma programs in event planning. Getting one of these diplomas under your belt will show customers that you're serious about their time and money, and that you're qualified to organize their events. Many of these programs include a practicum, where you work hand-in-hand with a qualified event planner to get on-the-job experience.
