It's like that in ALL sports!
During the World Cup, ESPN tuned in to the German broadcast, and they hardly said anything!! It was actually quite enjoyable not to have the constant chattering going on.
I'd love it if they'd shut up in Football too, and especially Basketball! The game moves quickly enough that you don't need to put all the "color" commentary in there - the play-by-play is more than enough already (after all, it's TV, not radio!)

About two years ago I was watching a game on CBS (believe it was a Colt's game). I don't know if the problem was with CBS or if it was because I was watching it through Sunday Ticket, but there was so sort of technical problem. About halfway through the game, the announcers mics went out. The only time you could hear them was between plays. The rest of the time, there was just the field mics. It was by far the best game I've ever watched on TV. As long as the cameras stayed on the field, all you could hear was the game itself; the players, the fans, the coaches. It was absolutely incredible, and I wish to god I could figure out how to make every game sound like that.

You probably don't remember the game, back in the 70's, when NBC broadcast a game sans announcers. It was actually boring.
i do, however, agree with you. Except for one fact, letting them talk leads to classic moments like last year's when Madden describing a running back's style said,
"....he'll take it up the "A" hole."

I think if I had all the answers and knew exactly what was going on all the time...then it would be time to get my fat butt out on the field and apply my infinite knowledge that causes me to become irrate at announcers...
wait
I did that...
I haven't heard a television announcer since I started coaching.
Now I just hear the sound of my own voice.
...cool shades by the way...

Football takes the cake. These info-junkies think I need to be taught the game that I have been watching since 1966. That's why I will turn the volume all the way down, I don't need them to dramatize, sermonize, or idolize.

Never forget that handy volume control on your set. Also there are bars that show the game but play music so you don't have to listen to the obvious. And of course there is no one telling you what just happened when you go to the ballgame.

Madden's hilarious - he needs to change his name to "Captain Obvious"
"Well, Pat, if you don't move the ball forward, you're never gonna get a first down!"
"Someone should tell that reciever that's he's gotta catch the ball to get a completion!"

madden does talk a lot but is very knowledgable... most football announcers are knowledgable... guys like dick vitale, chris berman, and bob sagget who color commentates olympic gymnastics every four years really irritate me... they couldn't analyze a dogbite if it was on their left calves...
