do even large cities depend on a boeing or a microsoft to bolster their success? what other factors come into play? can a small city be as successful as a much larger one?

extra credit: give an example of a successful american city. what makes it that way? why would you want to live there?

hint: you may wish to use these terms to better help you answer... livability, demographics, urbanism, in addition to economy, safety, opportunity.

Just like big business, it depends on who is running it, who is doing the work and what kind of support does it get. Also, location is a huge factor. Note that many, not all, successful cities are near water or a natural resource upon which they Can build at least part of their infrastructure. Take NYC. It has the Hudson River, is on the East coastline and has access to many social and environmental resources with little effort. The Mayor is usually a very well positioned politician with the necessary hooks to get things done. Also having support from tourism, massive numbers of companies wanting to be there or nearby all figure into the success, even after what could have been a light-out event on 9/11. The ability to recover from an event this massive heavily depends on strong management and the ability to get support. Another factor, a huge workforce to pull talent from.

NY and Chicago also have large bodies of water near them. In the old days where boats could ship necessities up and down the rivers (Mississippi & Hudson Bay). This still happen today but not as important. We have other ways now to get things back and forth.

Experienced leaders who have integrity.
Offering tax breaks to new businesses.

Hudson, OH is a very successful city with low crime, decent schools and a small town atmosphere that still accommodates industry and business growth.

If you go back to history, cities like New york city, Chicago has been the commercial nerve center of America

New York city is successfull because of all the money brought into that area.
