Wash the soot off then spray the entire thing with this stuff called Approach. You can get it online at www.approachit.net

It's fantastic stuff and there are no chemicals so you can go ahead and light a fire without worrying about breathing anything in. It'll clear up any odor problem you get.

regular cleaning is a must. also the kind and quality of wood being used can change the smells. To answer your question for now, a good fireplace and chiminey cleaning.

keep a fire lit (i dont mean a roaring fire all day every day just enough to keep things ticking over) and you can choose what wood your going to burn to get that wood's smell (oak, pine, etc.) in the room after all even in the summer when its hot during the day its still cold once the sun goes down, so thats when you light the fire

Make a decorative cover that will fit into the opening this will reduce cooling loss also

check out if there are chimney sweps in your area call and ask prices if there is more than one and have one clean it for you

Clean it. You have mold and mildew in it from condensation.
