pulled up old carpet, found particle board flooring underneath. I want to put down self adhesive tiles, do i need any special prep on this flooring before putting down tiles?

If you are dead set on putting self stick tiles on a particle board floor, you have to do a couple things first. Make sure the particle board has not been water damaged, if it has, it will flake just by rubbing your shoe across it. If this is the case, you will run into BIG problems. If it is still solid, then you will have to make sure it is clean by vacuuming it thoroughly and then, with a paint roller, apply a coat of latex (from any flooring supply) and let it dry. This will seal the surface and help keep the particle board from deteriorating and make a better bond with the adhesive on the back of the tiles.

hi i am a flooring contractor JAY JAY'S CUSTOM TILE AND you can install FLOORS and I would honestly suggest you use go with an entirely different material I know that this is a inexpensive material yet you will in the long run have to spend more due to the fact that no matter how good you prep your floor it will never be enough even a miniscule amount of dust will cause this type of flooring to fail I am not sure what you are paying for this product but for lesss than a dollar a foot you can install a laminate floating floor there are a lot of styles and patterns they have tile look alike hardwood look alike etc and it is a very easy floor to maintain no waxing or expensive cleaners just vinigar & water to clean with if you are going to go ahead and put in the supposebly self sticking vinyl tiles particle board is thr recommended underlayment though you should get an additive and mix it with a sheet vinyl glue and not rely on the glue on the tiles themselves and make sure that you apply wax over the entire installation it will help keep moisture from getting through the seams if you have any other questions let me know good luck with your project

After reading the several very useful answers, would like to pose a related question, if I may. Since I wasn't ready to finish my project right away after I took up the carpet, I coated the particle board with vinyl paint primer to water proof it keep dirt off of it. The floor is a bit wavy so I plan to use Webpatch 90 to level it up before I put down self adhesive tiles. Now I'm not sure I can do that. Do I have to sand off all that paint or apply a coat of something else or chuck it all and do something altogether different?

Have you ever tried using Duct tape on particle board. Okay so it sticks, but not well. All those little particles easily break away from the board and stick to the tape, making it full of junk and un stickable. SO you lay self adhesive floor down on this mine field of little bits of wood and very soon after a few walks over the floor the self adhesive is full of tiny particles that have broken loose from the flooring....and you've got to start over. Don't do it

They will stick, thats what Particle board is for, underlayment- if you worry, buy one and try it- Do not put ANYTHING- On that floor- let the cement on the Tile do its job- make dam certain the floor is clean, like on your hands and knees, with a Fox tail brush, that sweeps up tiny, tiny, particles , do this as you move along- laying the tiles. Tap in any nail heads, remove any staples, -

yes they will stick but I recommend you don't get the self adhesive tiles they are horrible I have them in my kitchen made by armstrong, after they were installed it was a pain to get the glue off from the edges of each tile because it squeezed thru the cracks of each tile being laid next to each other and in time they loosen and you have to constantly reglue them. You are better off getting lino in one sheet then you won't have this problem.

They won't stick to particle board.... Contact the flooring department at your local Home Depot or Lowes stores. They'll let you know what you need to do....

Yes, it should work if you have a hight density bord, but you may need to add some glue to it if it is low dencity. Good Luck.
