"Slashdot" is a sort of obnoxious parody of a URL.

Also /. is unix/linux for the root directory

The slashdot name came from the creator's desire to find an irritating web address. You can see this when you try to pronounce it out loud: h-t-t-p-colon-slash-slash-slash-dot-dot-org.
