There is no best. There is only pros and cons.

They both can be forced to do pretty much anything the other does but its the areas that need the forcing that makes it a good choice or not. I use both continually all day.

XP has many advantages as a desktop computer. More support for graphics and sound, more software available, more support for added equipment such as cameras or midi's. The individual things it does are "fancier" but dont play well with each other.

Linux on the other hand is more stable, more easily programmable, the programms are better at working together, and more "internet friendly". I use Linux for my servers.

If you already know XP very well as a desktop and want to make a server out of it, then you might get it to work. If you know Linux well as a server and want to start using it as a desktop then you might make it.

Depends on what you are using it for.

Linux, which is a "flavor" of Unix is one of the forerunners to DOS. Xp is written in DOS. DOS was written in Unix.

They say a real hacker uses Linux because of the ability to write matching code for database interface. Then it is a matter of finding a portal. YEH Wireless!

If you are just using the thing for small business and you will not require advanced networking or proprietary software, go with XP.

If you are building a system with multiple system integration make your backbone Linix because you can make it work with almost anything.

I have personal experience running a network of 350 stations all running Windows. The central server was 800 miles from the farethest of 3 locations. Centralized data with transfers so big US WEST had to build a portal just for us. All phone and dialing functions where handled from the central location. The backbone was Unix, and to make windows work we used what is called a "dos emulator".

So, if you email me what you are using it for I will give you a recommendation, free.

If you don't want to pay and want all the features and power in your hand then go for linux. No worrying about software piracy and countless updates, patches, applications, utilities etc.,

If you want an easy user interface and wide reach of versatile and different applications and stable documentation go for XP. But, you need to genuine software with SP2 to get updates from microsoft.

Linux Ubuntu / Compact , Safe and read your hardware w/o problem
no extra worthless software . try it out /
Kubuntu is neat , same OS but with a slicker look, way better than XP ,kind of look like Apple's OS.

Xp for gaming and such because of the compatability. but for work and such Linux. When buying into computers you've always got to think exactly what you want to use it for.

linux needs a complete hard drive re-formatting, is tricky for the beginner without some sort of linux guide for dummies.

xp is easier to use, nothing more to say
