It was too close to detonation to stop the bombs, and doesn't the smallest part of all of wish the world would go back to a simpler time before all of today's tech. If you will recall it was Tyler(pitt) who belched smoke and fell over. during the Norton/Pitt fight scene as we saw on the security cameras Norton was taking all of the abuse even in the scenes where he was supposedly hitting Pitt. "Do not shoot at your imaginary friend standing in front of the van full of explosives."

The ending is more a of a metaphor for the narrator realizing he doesn't need this alter-ego to live out his dreams for him.

if you wanna get technical, its not outside the reality of the movie to say there never was a gun (seeing as there is no physical tyler either). it was just his mind providing him with a way to destroy this other side of himself.

tyler died the minute the narrator CHOSE to kill himself. which, in a sense, he bested tyler on his own version of 'hitting rock bottom'

brad pitt-tyler is most definitely dead. he is no longer needed as the narrator can fnally stand up for himself.

i could probably talk about this movie for hours.

he couldnt do anything about the bombs. and he wanted to destroy them all along... tyler is everything the narrator wants to be. when the narrator meets tyler, tyler smokes and the narrator does not. later in the movie, tyler quits, and the narrator smokes.

anything tyler does is what the narrator wishes he could do. but realixzing that doing whatever you feel like isnt always right was part of the movie's message. deep down he wanted to destroy the entire system he complains about the entire film.... but i think he comes to terms with things and realizes his lack of control in the ending.

Tyler Durden. Mr. Single Serving lives, who knows, maybe happily ever after with Marla.

I think that's a tricky question. Since the Narrator realized he had split personalities and had it out with his other side then I think both kinda melded together after the final blow out making for one intensely pissed off skinny dude who was strangely attractive.
So I guess you could say both died and both lived and still be right either way.

I don't think that anyone (a real person) died. I think the main character killed his alto-ego and then discovered that "real" life with Marla might be okay to try.
